December PlainsSpeak Newsletter

ADVENT

Advent is a time of intentional anticipation, of preparing ourselves for the coming of the Christ child. It is not a few weeks of wrapping and baking for a one-day event on the 25th, but a preparation for the coming of the Christ Child into our lives.
Advent is a difficult time, when we as   Christians try to ignore the societal pull toward the glitzy, shiny promises of advertising’s ideas of the season.
We are challenged to become comfortable in the waiting, in the discipline of spiritual preparations.  Jesus will not enter our lives through our decorated doors, but through our calm, receptive hearts.  Dec. 25 will come and go, no matter how prepared we are, but true Christmas will only come when are hearts have made Christ’s path clear and level.
This Advent, may we find the patience and strength to remain focused on the time of preparation, celebrating the anticipation and rejoicing in the promise we have been given.

Preaching Points ‘Ppreciated and Pondered by Parishioners…

Every day, we can celebrate the forgiveness God has given us.”

“In reading the   Bible, we see that over and over again, God encourages us to pray. We can talk directly to God  ourselves. God wants us to communicate with Him on a regular basis.”

“Imagine if the only amount of forgiveness you received this week was equal to the amount of forgiveness you gave this week.”

“You have to put down the earthly trappings in your hands in order to pick up the cross to follow Jesus. And when you’re holding that cross, your hands are too full to pick up again whatever you’ve already put down.”

“God loves you—completely, for all time. So what are you going to do with your life to  return that love?”

PLAINS speak Summer 2013

Fifth Sundays
For the past three years, we have enjoyed gathering as one community whenever there’s a fifth Sunday in a month. Recently, we’ve seen a decline in attendance at these celebrations, and would like some feedback from you: should we continue these gatherings? Is there something else we can do to gather as a wider parish? Is there something preventing you from attending? Would carpooling make it easier for you to come?

Please share your thoughts with either Laura Marie or one of your wardens—we want to continue to meet the spiritual needs of our parish in ways that are beneficial and practical for everyone.

Please note: our next fifth Sunday takes place on 30 June, and we will be gathering at St. Matthew’s Binscarth for worship at 11 with pot luck to follow.

“Tell Us About the Philippines…”
Since my return from the PWRDF trip to the Philippines in February, I’ve been asked to tell about my experiences there. Which I am happy to do! I will be making a presentation on the trip: where we went, who we met, what we learned. This will take place during our pot luck following our fifth Sunday worship on 30 June at Binscarth.

How’s Your Vision?
Please remember the challenge to engage in visioning conversation for our Wider Parish. Who are we, who do we want to be, and how do we get there? Use the 8 focal points identified:    leadership, ministry, spirituality, structures, worship, small groups, evangelism, and relationships.
